Bipolar Disorder: Separating Myths from Facts

Bipolar disorder affects approximately 2.8% of adults in the United States, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood psychiatric conditions. Misconceptions about bipolar disorder can prevent people from seeking help and contribute to stigma.

Myth: Bipolar disorder just means having mood swings.

Fact: While mood episodes are central to bipolar disorder, they are far more intense and prolonged than ordinary mood swings. Manic episodes involve elevated or irritable mood, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, and impulsive behavior — lasting days to weeks. Depressive episodes involve profound sadness, fatigue, and hopelessness — also lasting weeks or longer.

Myth: People with bipolar disorder are dangerous or unpredictable.

Fact: The vast majority of people with bipolar disorder are not violent and are no more dangerous than the general population. With appropriate treatment, most people with bipolar disorder lead stable, productive lives.

Myth: Bipolar disorder cannot be treated effectively.

Fact: Bipolar disorder is highly treatable. Mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotics, and other medications can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of mood episodes. Psychotherapy helps patients recognize early warning signs and develop coping strategies.
