Medication Management: What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Starting psychiatric medication is a significant decision, and it is completely normal to have questions and concerns. At Wholerapha Psychiatry, we believe that informed patients make better decisions about their care.

Before Your Appointment

Before your first medication management appointment, gather information about any psychiatric medications you have taken in the past, including names, dosages, and how they affected you. Bring a list of all current medications, including supplements, as interactions can be important.

The Evaluation Process

Your first medication management appointment at Wholerapha Psychiatry is a comprehensive evaluation, typically lasting 60 to 90 minutes. Your provider will take a detailed psychiatric history, review your medical history, and conduct laboratory exams to identify underlying medical conditions that can mimic or worsen psychiatric symptoms.

Discussing Medication Options

If medication is recommended, your provider will explain the options clearly — how the medication works, what benefits you can expect, potential side effects, and how long it typically takes to see results. Medication is always a collaborative decision.

Follow-Up and Monitoring

Medication management is an ongoing process. After starting a new medication, you will have follow-up appointments to assess how you are responding. Your provider will monitor for side effects, evaluate effectiveness, and make adjustments as needed.
